Model 9E-20
manually
-
operated
spirit fluid, liquid, direct process duplicating machine, built by
DITTO, INCORPORATED
(a division of Bell & Howell)
in
Chicago, Illinois
. The machine’s serial number is
14561.
Although it is
USED
, it is in
excellent
operating condition. The upper brass moistening roller, the rubber lower moistening roller, and the impression roller are in good condition as well as their bearings. There are no missing parts or trays, nothing is cracked or broken, and is a fully-functioning duplicator. This DITTO E-20 is the third-generation design, first developed in the mid-1960's, following the enormously popular D-10 model that was introduced back in 1949, to meet the demands of the post-war generation for schools, colleges, and universities.
This is a heavy-duty, all metal, extremely well-built, clean machine, finished in two-tones of heather green with matching operating controls. It is almost impossible to make it jam or lock. There are no delicate parts to break. If you can turn a crank clockwise, you can make good copies, and up to 120 of them per minute! The machine has stainless steel side frames; a highly-polished aluminum alloy drum; and durable cast aluminum side covers. Both paper trays are steel. It measures 10-inches high, 19-inches deep, 31-inches long
(including operating crank and tray extensions)
, and weighs net* 44 pounds
(*without fluid or paper)
.
This duplicator features Ditto’s SURE-FEED
™
paper tray. The finger-tip adjustable side guides hold approximately 100 sheets of 20-pound paper or comparable card stock, which may range in three-inches or nine-inches in width, and up to 14-inches in length. Dual movable synchronized rubber feed wheels and corner separators assure positive feed of each sheet down to and including the last one. Odd-size or heavy stock can be manually fed by simply locking the automatic feeder unit in its upright position. There are no tricky rubber retainer pads or breaker bars to fuss with. The tray can be loaded in seconds each time with just the flip of a single lever. In addition, feed table markings correlate with those on the master clamp. Master loading is quick and positive by simply moving the clamp lever with a simple forward motion to open, and back to close. It has a maximum duplicating area of 8-1/2-inches by 13-5/8-inches. The maximum spirit master size is 9-inches by 14-inches.
With the Spirit Fluid Process, you can duplicate in one to five colors simultaneously − Purple, Red, Green, Blue, or Black – depending upon the color of the aniline dye-impregnated carbon sheet used in preparing the master. The duplicator is the device that brings the master, fluid, and blank paper together to produce the copy. Each sheet is automatically fed into the machine, moistened with spirit fluid
(methanol alcohol)
that will dissolve a small portion of the dye image when pressed against the master by the impression roller, then ejected and stacked onto the receiving tray, all accomplished within less than a second per copy. One copy is made for each clockwise revolution of the operating crank and delivered into the receiving tray face up. A great tutorial about the basic fundamentals of the spirit duplicating process and equipment operation can easily be found on-line.
As with all DITTO
®
Direct Process Duplicators, there are separate controls for both the fluid and impression roller to achieve maximum, satisfactory, and economical run lengths of copies per master. The fluid system is operator-controlled, pump-regulated, thereby obtaining up to 30% more copies to every gallon of fluid. The fluid supply, a brass tank, holds approximately one quart, and its cap has a built-in fluid level indicator.
Finished copies are automatically stacked face-up in the receiving tray with the aid of the adjustable side guides and magnetic back stop that easily accommodates various lengths and widths of impression paper. There is a three-digit, re-settable copy counter to keep tally of the number of copies reproduced.
This auction also includes a box of 8-1/2-inch by 11-inch, purple, Spirit Process master units with preparation directions; a 20-page spiral-bound copy of the detailed operating and maintenance instructions; one replacement fluid wick
(four-sided)
; one pair of paper feed wheels; a complete set of cork pads; and a plastic dust cover. The duplicator will be carefully packed in a
double
cardboard container, with the operating crank, feeder unit, feed table, wick holder, and receiving tray packed
separately
to prevent shipping damage. Illustrated re-assembly and set-up directions are included in the operating instruction book. Actual sample copies duplicated on this Ditto E-20 will also be included. Shipping will be via
